The Anti Hijacking bill was passed by Lok Sabha on May 9,2016 which was introduced by Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju on Dec 17,2014 in Rajya Sabha. The bill was passed by Rajya Sabha in first week of May,2016 and later on passed by Lok Sabha.
Earlier the issue of hijacking was being tackled by Anti hijacking Act,1982. According to Anti hijacking Act, If a commercial aircraft in service is controlled and seized by illicit means and intentionally by any use of technology or force or coercion or any other means of intimidation,it is known as hijacking of aircraft. In addition if a person helps any other person for hijacking , he/she will be prosecuted for abetting the crime.
If a person directs another person to commit the act of hijacking or if a person agrees with the act of hijacking, it is considered as a crime. Hijacking is a non bailable crime under the act. The punishment for hijacking includes either death penalty or life imprisonment and confiscation of all movable and immovable property of hijacker.
