Sardar Sarovar Dam called as an Engineering marvel by Prime minister of India Narendra Modi was dedicated to the Nation. It took a long time of about 56 years for this dam to be completed with lots of controversies and problems since its inception. The dam had many controversies in the past including protests by environmentalists. The project of the dam was conceived by Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel in 1946. The dam was dedicated to the nation by Prime minister celebrating his 67th birthday.
The water of the dam will be used for irrigation purposes, will provide drinking water and will help to add greenery across the belt.The foundation stone of the dam was laid down in 1961 by First prime minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru. There was dispute between state of Madhya Pradesh and Gujrat over the sharing of water. A committee was appointed under Dr. A.N.Khosla known as Khosla committee to devise the formula for sharing of water between two states however it was not agreeable by Madhya Pradesh. A tribunal was set up in 1969 to resolve the issue and it gave its award in 1979.
However Narmada Bachao andolan was started by Medha Patekar over the issue of environmental concerns and dispalcement of tribals. The matter reached Supreme court of India who allowed construction of dam in year 2000 with some limitation on dam height. Now the dam has bben dedicated to the nation by Prime minister Shri. Narendra Modi.
